Verlie Hutchens ~ Children's Author and Craft Artist

(aka Professor VerlieBird when she teaches Mad Science)

Verlie crafted a vast number of the projects for the images
in this delightful series of children's craft books from Boyds Mills Press.
Verlie was a rare and unique 'find' for them. She has a fine arts degree in 'real' crafts, and,
as a children's writer (with a good working relationship with her own inner child)
she is delighted to return to original materials and styles from her childhood.

PROGRAMS

Making Friends

This workshop explores how to make expressive faces with simple shapes and shifts in position. Includes some history about me, the books, the crafts in them; voluntary child participation in front of the group, and a craft to take home.

How My Art Got Into Books

An inspirational presentation on how my childhood experiences (and beyond) led me back to my roots as a Paper (and any other materials that catch my fancy) Sculptor for kids.

Teachers are expected to remain actively involved inside the classroom; and to have the craft supplies from the enclosed list available in the classroom. I provide examples, inspiration, and visual materials only.

Trash-to-Treasure craft workshop

Grades K-2: Children collect items for a classroom trash-to-treasure chest of inspiring 'found object' craft materials ahead of time. During our time together I will show crafts that I have made, materials I have used, and ways I have used them. Using the things in the chest, I will brainstorm ideas with the children about projects that could be made from those things. We will make one pre-planned craft project together. (One as a group if only myself and the teacher are present. One for each child if there are plenty of parent volunteers to help.)

Grades 3-6: Similar to K-1, except the group will decorate their trash box to look like a treasure chest and brainstorm, invent, and create one craft project together on the spot, using the objects in their treasure chest.

This workshop works well as a 2-3 day series, which may be spread out over several weeks if close to home.

Teachers are expected to remain actively involved inside the classroom; and to have the children collect objects ahead of time, to have them available in a box in the classroom before my visit, and to have the craft supplies from the enclosed list available in the classroom. I provide examples, inspiration, and visual materials only.

Trash-to-Treasure, or Craft workshop for teachers

This half-day (2 hours) or full-day (4 hours) workshop for teachers is very similar to the kids' workshops, with added discussion and exploration of using art and creativity in the classroom to support curriculum. Includes many more tips for materials, techniques, and how to brainstorm project ideas.

FEES

$600 for a full day including up to 5 sessions for up to 35 students. Sessions are 30 – 50 minutes long, depending on grade level. Half days (2 longer to 3 shorter sessions: $400) are also available. Contact me about series, artist-in-residence, or follow-up visits and related fees.
